Can you put a dehumidifier in a closet? Yes, if the closet is large enough to give the unit the air space its manual requires. GE, for example, asks for at least 18 inches on all sides and a temperature above 41°F. You also need safe access to empty or drain it. Most small reach-in closets cannot meet these requirements, so measure the space before buying.
Below you will find a measurement checklist to compare your closet with the manual, plus alternatives when a powered unit will not fit.
Can you put a dehumidifier in a closet? Check the manual first
Every model has its own installation rules. GE’s general guidance says to allow 18 inches of air space on all sides, keep doors and windows closed, and avoid rooms colder than 41°F or warmer than 90°F. Frigidaire says the unit must not restrict air flowing into the rear coil.
Some online guides quote a single universal clearance, such as 12 inches. Use the figure printed in your own manual instead: it is the one the maker designed and tested the unit around.
- Find the manual on the maker’s website using the model number.
- Note the clearances for the sides, back and top, and the air intake and outlet positions.
- Note the temperature range and the electrical requirements.
- Measure the closet with the shelves and clothing as they normally are.
- Compare using the table below.
Closet measurement checklist
| Manual requirement | Example value | Your closet | If it does not meet it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clearance on all sides | 18 in (GE) | Measure from each side of the unit | Use a larger walk-in or keep the unit in the room |
| Air intake and outlet unblocked | No clothes or boxes in front | Check where the grilles face | Move items or choose another spot |
| Operating temperature | 41–90°F (GE) | Read a thermometer inside | Do not use it in an unheated closet |
| Power | Grounded outlet, no extension cord | Is there an outlet inside? | Do not run a cord under the door |
| Emptying or draining | Bucket accessible, or hose to a drain | Can you remove the bucket easily? | Choose a spot with access |
| Heat and noise | Unit releases warm air | Is the closet next to a bed? | Leave the door open or relocate |
Where not to put a dehumidifier
Avoid tight spaces that block the air intake or outlet. A dehumidifier pulls in room air, removes water and blows warmer air back out. Without space, it recirculates its own exhaust and works poorly.
- Small reach-in closets packed with clothes.
- Unheated spaces below the model’s minimum temperature, where the coil can frost.
- Utility closets holding a furnace or water heater; follow those appliances’ clearance rules and keep their space clear.
- Anywhere a cord crosses a doorway, where it can be pinched or tripped over.
Is it good to have a dehumidifier in your closet?
It helps when the closet itself is the problem and has room for the unit. A walk-in closet with musty air but a dry bedroom is a good candidate.
A unit shut inside a closet will not dry the bedroom. If both rooms are humid, run the dehumidifier in the bedroom and leave the closet door open. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%.
If you already see mold on the wall, fix that moisture source first. Our guide to mold in a closet on an outside wall explains how to compare the closet with the room.
What is the best way to absorb moisture in a closet?
Start with airflow and dry storage, then add a moisture absorber if needed. NDSU Extension recommends keeping items away from the outside wall, drying everything before storing it, and leaving the closet door open during very cold weather.
- Leave a gap between clothing and the back wall.
- Never store damp items, including gym bags and shoes.
- Use desiccant packs such as calcium chloride or silica gel in small closets. Replace or recharge them as the package directs, and keep them away from children and pets.
- Check humidity with a meter (about $10–$50) to see whether the measures are working.
Can I put a dehumidifier in a closed closet?
Only if the closet meets the manual’s clearances and stays within the operating temperature with the door shut. In practice, a closed reach-in closet gets warm and starves the unit of air.
Plug the unit straight into a grounded outlet, as the manual directs. Do not cover it with clothes, and stop using it if it smells hot, trips a breaker or leaks.
Quick questions
What capacity do I need for a closet?
A small closet needs far less capacity than a room. Use the maker’s sizing guide; an oversized unit in a tiny space may cycle constantly.
Will it help a damp mattress in the same room?
Not directly. A damp mattress usually needs airflow under the bed. See why a mattress gets wet underneath.
